Recent Accomplishments
- We released a major report on Cost-Efficient Passive House Delivery: Learning from the Massachusetts Experience. We interviewed more than 40 Passive House practitioners—developers, architects, engineers, consultants, verifiers, and contractors—to identify the most pressing educational needs facing the industry today and develop a strategy to meet them. Together, our interviewees have worked on 136 distinct Passive House projects across the Commonwealth. In a competitive industry where experience is a hard-earned asset, they generously shared their time and knowledge to help everyone working in this field.
- We hired two new staff members to increase the capacity of the organization to serve our members: Beth Campbell (our new Education Program Director) and Alexander Gard-Murray (our new Executive Director).
- We have continued our partnership with the Mass Save Passive House & All-Electric Homes Training Program, which has now provided over 90 free Lunch & Learns and Workshops, many of which have recordings available in our Online Video Library for on-demand viewing.
- We overhauled our Passive House 101 curriculum to more effectively introduce people at all levels to the basics behind passive building, which we can deliver free to your organization. We can deliver this course for free to your organization.
- Over the last few years, we’ve worked extensively with the DOER to incorporate the Passive House into the Specialized Opt-In Stretch Code. The final version of the Opt-In Code now requires all multi-family buildings over 12,000 GSF to be Passive House certified and allows Passive House as a pre-approved alternative pathway for all other projects. This is a first in the nation accomplishment.
- We’ve supported towns and cities across the Commonwealth by providing presentations, trainings, fact sheets, and other resources. More than 50 municipalities have now opted in. When Boston announced their commitment to opting-in, Mayor Wu directly thanked PHMass in her press conference for our work in getting these new codes passed.
- Beyond training, we’ve continued to support and advocate for the Mass Save Passive House Incentive Program and have seen it reach over 30,000 registered units of housing across the state. The program provides up to $3,750 per unit for certified multifamily projects as well as additional funding for feasibility studies and energy modeling costs, and single-family incentives starting at $25,000.
