SUMMARY:Designing the Future: Lessons from 3 Massachusetts Passive Schools
DESCRIPTION:⚡ This is a hybrid in-person and virtual event ⚡ \nNote: Location TBD\, please check back here closer to the event. \nThe landscape of K-12 design in Massachusetts is shifting toward Passive House. Driven by the updated MA Stretch Code\, a new generation of schools is emerging—schools that aren’t just energy efficient\, but are healthier\, quieter\, and less expensive to operate. \nJoin us for an exploration of three pioneering Massachusetts projects: Squantum School\, Charleswood Elementary\, and Revere High School. We will look at passive building certification for schools through several lenses: Certified Passive House Consultant\, Architect\, and MEP Engineer. From navigating school-appropriate assemblies to balancing the Passive House vs. TEDI pathways\, we’ll discuss the technical solutions and the design insights that are setting the new standard for educational infrastructure. \nOur presentation panel includes: \n\nKate Bubriski (Principal\, Director of Building Performance at Arrowstreet)\, a leader in net-zero design with over 6 million square feet of high-performing buildings\nRyan Dirks (Senior Associate\, Senior Sustainability Specialist at Perkins Eastman)\, a building science specialist and co-author of Passive House Details\nJess Farber (Vice President at CMTA)\, an innovation leader in MEP engineering driving decarbonization across New England\nNicole Peterson (Senior Associate at Thornton Tomasetti)\, a leader in facade optimization and building performance analysis\n\n👉 Continuing Ed: 1 AIA/HSW\, 2 PHI Designer/Tradesperson\, 1 Phius credit available \n📍 For in-person attendees\, join us before the presentation for a happy hour from 5:30-6:00 PM Eastern \n🎤 For virtual attendees\, the presentation starts at 6:00 PM Eastern \n🍷🧀 Refreshments provided \nRegister Here\nThis event is made possible by the Sponsors of Mass Save:

SUMMARY:Measuring Residential Ventilation Air Flows
DESCRIPTION:⚡⚡ This is a hybrid in-person and virtual event ⚡⚡ \nAirtight construction is a hallmark of high performance construction\, but requires a comprehensive ventilation system as the foundation of good indoor air quality. Join Dr. Iain Walker\, ASHRAE Fellow and staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\, for an expert breakdown of how we measure what matters. This session moves beyond the basics to explore the technologies—both simple and sophisticated—for measuring ventilation airflows and summarizes relevant diagnostic standards and test methods\, such as RESNET 380. Drawing on historical background and recent USDOE studies of ventilation systems in new residences\, Dr. Walker will share insights into what works (and what doesn’t)\, what is easy to measure (and what isn’t)\, and the broader implications for the residential construction industry. \n👉 Continuing Ed: pending approval \n📍 For in-person attendees\, join us before the presentation for a happy hour from 5:30-6:00 PM Eastern \n🎤 For virtual attendees\, the presentation starts at 6:00 PM Eastern \n🍷🧀 Refreshments provided \nRegister Here\nThis event is made possible by the Sponsors of Mass Save:

SUMMARY:Ventilation Summit
DESCRIPTION:Every passive building depends on continuous\, balanced ventilation. It’s a critical part of all Passive House standards. But designing\, installing\, and balancing these systems can present challenges\, especially in larger multifamily buildings with complex needs. \nThis workshop is intended to bring together stakeholders from across the Passive House Massachusetts community to have a frank\, technical\, and constructive conversation about resolving issues related to ventilation. Topics of special focus will include Constant Airflow Regulators or Automatic Balancing Dampers and ventilation measurement best practices. \nThis event is still in the planning stages. As we put together our agenda\, feel free to reach out to Alexander Gard-Murray at alexander@phmass.org with any suggestions or questions. \nModerators: \nIain Walker\, PhD is the leader of the Residential Buildings Team at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. He is an ASHRAE Fellow\, deputy department head for Whole Building Systems Department of BIES\, and leader of DOE core National Laboratory IAQ team. He is also leader and developer on standards and technical committees for ASHRAE\, ASTM\, RESNET\, IEC\, the IEA and other national and international organizations\, board member of the IEA Annex 5 Air Infiltration and Ventilation Center\, and a member of the RESNET Standards Management Board. \nAlexander Gard-Murray\, PhD is the Executive Director of Passive House Massachusetts. He was previously Director of the Greenhouse Institute\, and before that he taught and researched energy and environmental policy in the Government Department at Harvard and the Climate Solutions Lab at Brown. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Western Mass Passive House Forum
DESCRIPTION:⚡⚡ This is a free\, in-person event in Northampton\, MA ⚡⚡ \nJoin Passive House Massachusetts for an afternoon of professional learning and community connection. This forum is designed to bring the Western Massachusetts high performance community together to explore field-tested research and a local project case study\, followed by an afternoon networking reception. \nSession 1: Massive Learnings from Massachusetts Multifamily\nWant to learn from the experience of more than 20 certified Massachusetts Passive House multifamily projects? Here in the Commonwealth\, we are at the forefront of passive building adoption. This presentation synthesizes “best of” practices drawn from in-depth interviews with over 40 professionals—including developers\, architects\, and site supervisors. Passive House Massachusetts has uncovered critical lessons to help you skip common pitfalls\, understand the most challenging aspects of certification\, and hear how projects are bringing costs down. \nThis presentation dives into specifics about persistent issues with central ventilation\, air infiltration “gotchas\,” midpoint air tightness testing\, and how design and engineering detailing affects success. Presenters Beth Campbell (Education Program Director\, PHMass) and Alexander Gard-Murray (Executive Director\, PHMass) will share recurring themes identified through this comprehensive assessment. Discover the specific knowledge gaps and educational needs highlighted by experienced practitioners to better understand where focused resources are most needed within the passive building community. \n\nSession 2: East Gables: Scaling Passive House for Supportive Housing in the Pioneer Valley\nHow do you deliver a high-performance\, all-electric project that balances rigorous energy standards with the specific needs of supportive housing? East Gables in Amherst stands as a compelling answer—a 28-unit studio apartment community that proves Passive House performance is both achievable and essential for resilient\, affordable housing. This session provides a multi-angled look at the project’s lifecycle\, exploring how a shared vision across the development\, design\, and construction teams allowed this project to meet its ambitious targets on a tight village lot. \nThis panel discussion will highlight the importance of interdisciplinary coordination and share experiences navigating the complexities of the East Gables build: \n\nMark Newey\, Managing Principal\, Airtight Energy Consulting (CPHC/Verifier)\nLaura Baker\, Real Estate Project Manager\, Valley Community Development (Developer)\nTom Chalmers\, President & Project Architect\, Austin Design Cooperative (Architect)\nJason Curtis\, Senior Vice President\, Tighe & Bond (Engineer)\nLynne Badgett\, Senior Project Manager\, Western Builders (Contractor)\n\n\nReception \nFollowing the presentations\, please join us for a networking reception.
