PHMA May: Passive Affordable Housing Design and Construction Lessons Learned

May 14, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for our May meeting, open to all, as we welcome Lauren Baumann and Thomas Chase from New Ecology, Inc., to discuss their experiences to date with affordable multifamily passive house.

Passive Affordable Housing Design and Construction: Lessons Learned from Lifecycle Modeling and the Field

New Ecology will provide the audience insight into Passive Affordable Design and Construction in two parts. The first is an overview of the results of Stretch Code vs. Passive House lifecycle energy consumption, cost, and operating carbon emissions analysis for projected multifamily affordable housing designs. This will be followed by a detailed description of the path to achieving a Passive House certification in multifamily affordable housing based on project experience, including the Homeowner’s Rehab, Inc. Concord Highlands project designed by ICON Architects. The 98-unit Concord Highlands affordable housing development in North Cambridge is on track to be the first certified affordable multifamily passive house project in Massachusetts. The presenters will outline the design process and discuss the lessons learned in the construction process to date with the hopes of helping future projects successfully and smoothly navigate affordable housing passive house certifications.
